Marketing director: who they are and what they do

A marketing director is a member of a company's leadership responsible for the marketing strategy, brand, budget and marketing performance. They lead the internal marketing team and agencies, set the positioning and target audiences, measure marketing's contribution to revenue and work with sales. Internationally the role corresponds to the position of CMO (Chief Marketing Officer).

What a marketing director is responsible for

A marketing director has one core responsibility in the company: that marketing demonstrably contributes to revenue. Not to "do marketing" - to produce demand that sales can close.

  • Strategy and positioning. Who the company sells to, how it differs and why a customer should choose it. This decision precedes every campaign; where it is missing, marketing just produces activity.
  • Plan and budget. Priorities, channels, allocation of money and people. A marketing director is a steward of the budget, not its spender.
  • Leading the team and agencies. Internal marketers need direction and development, agencies need a brief and oversight. Without senior leadership the agency manages itself.
  • Measurement. Lead generation, conversion, contribution to the pipeline. Marketing without measurement is a cost centre, with measurement an investment.
  • Cooperation with sales. A shared definition of a lead, a handover process, feedback from sales meetings back into campaigns. From our practice: this is where the efficiency of the whole company breaks.

Who they report to

As a rule directly to the CEO or owner. In international nomenclature the role corresponds to a CMO, Chief Marketing Officer. It is worth noting this is the least stable seat in leadership: the average tenure of a CMO in S&P 500 companies has dropped to 4.1 years, the shortest of all C-level roles (Spencer Stuart, 2026).

What a marketing director costs

The median gross salary of a senior marketing director in the Czech Republic is 140 thousand CZK per month (salary surveys by Hays, Salary Expert, platy.cz, 2025). Add employer contributions of 33.8 %, a bonus component and benefits - the total monthly cost commonly goes over 200 thousand CZK. When not to fill the role full time

In a company of 20 to 250 people there is typically 1 to 3 days a week of strategic work for a senior marketing director. Hiring someone for it full time means paying the senior rate even for the days when no one needs the seniority - and risking that the senior person gets bored to the point of leaving.

The alternative is called a fractional CMO abroad: an external marketing director part time, from 38 thousand CZK per month, with the same responsibility for strategy and leadership. The opposite case - a working marketing department whose director left and someone has to run it daily - is handled by an interim manager.
