Who is an external marketing director
An external marketing director is an experienced marketing leader who runs a company's marketing part time, typically 1 to 3 days a week, as an external partner on an invoice. In international practice this role is called a fractional CMO. The company gets senior strategic leadership without the cost of a full-time hire.
What the role involves
An external marketing director does the same work as an internal marketing director: strategy, leading the team, managing agencies, budget, measurement. The difference is the format - they do not work full time and are not an employee. They come into the company 1 to 3 days a week, invoice and run marketing for 2 to 4 companies in parallel.
This format makes sense for companies that need a marketing director but not for 40 hours a week. Which, in our experience, is most Czech B2B companies up to 250 people: the work for a senior CMO in them is 1 to 3 days, the rest of a full-time role would be filled by operations that do not need a senior person.
One role, several names
Several labels are used for this role in the Czech environment: external marketing director, part-time marketing director, a CMO on a reduced schedule, a rented CMO. They all describe the same thing and all have the same international equivalent: fractional CMO. Under that name you will find the model described in detail, including the price and the decision framework for when it makes sense.
Watch out for confusion with the interim role: an interim manager is in the company most of the week and holds the position after a permanent director leaves. An external marketing director in the fractional mode builds marketing part time. A different problem, a different tool, a different price.

Frequently asked questions
Is an external marketing director the same as a fractional CMO?
Yes. External marketing director, part-time marketing director or a CMO for a few days a week are Czech descriptive names for the model that is internationally called a fractional CMO.
How does an external marketing director differ from an agency?
An agency executes a brief: campaigns, content, websites. An external marketing director creates the brief, manages the agencies and is accountable for strategy and results. They are complementary roles, not alternatives.
How do they differ from a marketing consultant?
A consultant recommends and leaves with an invoice. An external marketing director stays: they lead the team, oversee delivery of the strategy and are accountable for the result as a member of leadership, just part time.
