What is a fractional CMO

A fractional CMO is an external marketing director on a part-time basis, typically 1 to 3 days a week. They set the marketing strategy, lead the internal team and agencies and connect marketing to sales. They work for 2 to 4 companies in parallel; the engagement has a project frame of 3 to 6 months with an option to extend.

The fractional CMO's role

A fractional CMO solves a situation we run into repeatedly in Czech B2B companies: marketing rests on one capable person buried in execution, there is no strategy, priorities are set by whoever shouts loudest at the moment, and agencies change every year. The company needs a marketing director - but not for 40 hours a week.

A fractional CMO comes in for 1 to 3 days a week as an external strategic partner. Specifically:

  • Strategy and positioning. Target audience, offer, paths to customers. Without this, every campaign is throwing money into the dark.
  • Leading the team. Mentors juniors, gives work direction and priorities. The team stops firefighting and starts building.
  • Managing agencies and suppliers. On the client side, with budget responsibility.
  • Measurement and connection to sales. KPIs, reporting, a shared definition of a lead with sales. Marketing that is not measured cannot be managed.

What a fractional CMO is not

It is not an interim manager - who is in the company most of the week and holds the position after a permanent director leaves (we explain the difference here). It is not a consultant - who recommends and leaves; a fractional CMO stays and is accountable for delivery. And it is not an agency - an agency executes a brief, a fractional CMO creates the brief and manages the agencies.

Cost and return

The fractional model starts from 38 thousand CZK per month. Full-time comparison: the median gross salary of a senior CMO in the Czech Republic is 140 thousand CZK per month (salary surveys by Hays, Salary Expert, platy.cz, 2025). Add employer contributions of 33.8 %, bonuses and benefits - the real monthly cost runs well over 200 thousand. A company using the fractional model pays a fraction and gets the same senior level, just for fewer days.

Abroad, this calculation was settled long ago: US companies pay a fractional CMO typically 8 to 22 thousand dollars a month and save 40 to 70 % compared with a full-time hire of the same level (Fractionus, 2026).

An external marketing director part time, a marketing director for 2 days a week, a rented CMO - these are all Czech descriptive names for the same model. In international practice it has one name: fractional CMO.

Frequently asked questions

What does a fractional CMO do?

They set the strategy, positioning and target audience, lead and develop the internal team, manage agencies, put measurement and KPIs in place and connect marketing to sales. They are a strategic partner to the CEO.

What does a fractional CMO not do?

They do not execute with their own hands: they do not write content, do design or set up ads. Execution stays with the team or agencies. A fractional CMO is a leader, not a specialist - they only work when they have someone to lead.

How much does a fractional CMO cost in the Czech market?

The fractional model starts from 38 thousand CZK per month. For comparison: the median gross salary of a senior CMO in the Czech Republic is 140 thousand CZK per month (salary surveys by Hays, Salary Expert, platy.cz, 2025), and contributions of 33.8 %, bonuses and benefits are added on top.

When does a fractional CMO not make sense for a company?

When there is no one to lead. A fractional CMO without a team or at least agencies to manage is an expensive voice in Slack. And when a company needs daily operational management of a large marketing department, that is a brief for a full-time or interim role, not fractional.
