What is ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)
An ICP (Ideal Customer Profile) is a description of the ideal customer company: one your product or service brings the most value to and which at the same time has the most value for you. It is defined by traits such as industry, size, situation and budget. The ICP determines who marketing and sales aim at - and who they deliberately do not aim at.
What an ICP is for
An ICP is a decision about who you sell to - and an equally important decision about who you do not. The acronym means Ideal Customer Profile and has other meanings outside marketing (in engineering, medicine or the crypto world); here we mean the marketing one.
A company without a defined ICP shoots wide: campaigns to everyone, salespeople take every meeting, offers bend to whoever happened to get in touch. It looks like maximising opportunities, in reality it is maximising costs - every segment requires a different message, a different sales process and different service, and the company pays for them all at once.
The ICP cuts this scatter. It defines the companies you bring the most value to and which have the most value for you: industry, size, typical situation ("growing and can't keep up", "expanding abroad"), budget, technology stack. Marketing then knows who it produces content for, sales knows which enquiries to reject, and lead qualification has its first and hardest criterion: matches the ICP or not.
How to define an ICP
The best source is not a brainstorm, but history. Sort your existing customers by value and satisfaction on both sides and look at what the best ones have in common. The pattern that emerges - industry, size, situation at the moment of purchase, who decided - is your ICP. Add a negative definition: the traits of customers whom cooperation with hurt.
Two practical rules. First, the ICP is a document, not folklore: it must be written down and marketing and sales must share it word for word, otherwise each imagines a different customer. Second, the ICP is revised - the company evolves and the profile of the ideal customer with it, typically once a year.
The most common mistake
Defining an ICP and not enforcing it. A profile in a presentation binds no one - it becomes binding only when sales actually rejects enquiries outside the profile and marketing actually stops spending on segments outside it. That is uncomfortable, and precisely why most companies do not do it. Discipline in the ICP is one of the things that shows whether a company has a strategy, or merely has one written down.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an ICP and a persona?
An ICP describes a company (industry, size, situation), a persona a specific person in it (role, motivations, concerns). In B2B you need both: the ICP says which companies to go to, the personas say who to talk to there and how.
How is an ICP defined?
Most reliably from your own data: by analysing your best existing customers - those with the highest value, the smoothest cooperation and the fastest purchase. The profile is built from their shared traits. An ICP defined from a desk without data is a wish, not a profile.
What does the acronym ICP mean in other contexts?
Outside marketing, ICP is also used in technical and medical fields and as the name of the Internet Computer cryptocurrency. In B2B marketing and sales it always means Ideal Customer Profile.
