Who is an external sales director

An external sales director is an experienced sales leader who runs a company's sales part time, typically 1 to 3 days a week, as an external partner on an invoice. In international practice this role is called a fractional CSO. The company gets senior sales leadership without the cost of a full-time hire.

What the role involves

An external sales director does the work of an internal sales director, just in a different format: 1 to 3 days a week, on an invoice, for several companies in parallel. The scope stays the same - sales strategy, leading salespeople, process, pipeline, CRM, forecast and cooperation with marketing.

The most common situation companies consider this role in: sales is done by the owner alone, because there is no one to take it over, or the company has salespeople but no sales - individuals without a process, without leadership and without measurement. A full-time sales director is often out of budget for a company up to 250 people, and there would not be a full week of work for them anyway.

One role, several names

External sales director, part-time sales director, sales director for 2 days a week - all these labels describe the model internationally called a fractional CSO. There you will find a detailed description of the role, including what it does, what it does not do and when it makes sense combined with a fractional CMO.

And the same warning as on the marketing side: do not confuse it with the interim role. An interim sales director joins full time in a working sales department that has lost its head. An external sales director in the fractional mode builds the sales system - part time and at a fraction of the cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is an external sales director the same as a fractional CSO?

Yes. External sales director or part-time sales director are Czech names for the model that is internationally called a fractional CSO.

Does an external sales director sell themselves?

No. Their job is to build the system in which your salespeople sell: strategy, process, pipeline, leading people, CRM. They are not a hired salesperson calling through your database.

When does an external sales director make sense?

When sales rests on the owner or on salespeople without leadership and the company needs a sales system, but a full-time sales director would not pay off.
